Pennsylvania Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-Delaware, said he and other lawmakers will meet on the Capitol steps in Harrisburg at 2 p.m. today "in support of justice and equality in Pennsylvania and across the nation."
Kirkland said "Hoodies on the Hill" will include House members and staff wearing hooded sweatshirts in the wake of the controversy surrounding the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a confrontation the night of Feb. 26 in a gated community in Sanford, Fla.
Zimmerman contends that Martin knocked him to the ground and beat him, and that he shot Martin in self-defense. Police have not arrested Zimmerman, and published reports have said police generally believe Zimmerman’s version of the events.
The Sanford police chief has temporarily stepped down, and activists and rallies across the country, including in the midstate, have protested the killing. A special prosecutor appointed by the Florida governor is investigating the incident, along with state and federal authorities.
Martin was wearing a hoodie -- a hooded sweatshirt -- when he was shot, and some have claimed that made him look threatening.
