HARRISBURG,
May 14 – State Rep. Ronald G. Waters,
D-Phila./Delaware, and other members of the House Democratic Policy Committee,
toured the Milton Hershey School May 10.
Waters, chairman of
the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, said he initially requested the tour
to learn more about the opportunities available at the school for children of
low-income families. The tour was given by Dr. Anthony Colistra, president of
the school.
"I'd like to thank
Dr. Colistra and staff and students of the Milton Hershey School for granting us
this tour," Waters said. "We received a rare glimpse into the school, learning
some of its history and viewing the school's current
facilities."
Founded more than 100
years ago by Milton and Catherine Hershey, the Milton Hershey School is a free,
private, year-round pre-K-12 school for children from low-income families, or
with limited resources and social need.
More than 1,800
students attend the Milton Hershey School in Derry Township and represent a mix
of ethnicities, including white (44 percent), black (30 percent) and hispanic
(12 percent). The students hail from the immediate area, as well as from the
rest of the state and 32 other states, including D.C.
"This 10,000-acre
property owned and operated by Milton and Catherine Hershey’s deed of trust and
its vast opportunities available to students are probably not well known among
people who come from low-income, needy families. It was a very educational visit
and I plan to make sure that students and families in my district are aware of
this opportunity," Waters said.
