HARRISBURG,
Aug. 6 – State Rep. Ronald Waters,
D-Delaware/Phila., recently set up a mobile office at the Grace Court
Apartments, an affordable housing complex for senior citizens, and assisted the
residents with a variety of services.
Members of Waters’
staff aided seniors in completing birth certificate requests, fielded questions,
and offered assistance with filling out the free voter ID applications, the
latter task being most urgent.
"For these seniors,
voting in elections is a right to which they place extreme value because many of
them remember a time where the laws of this country barred them from the voting
places," Waters said. "After today, they can rest assured that they will not be
disqualified from carrying out their constitutional right, and many of them see
this as a duty to their country."
Waters has been very
vocal in opposition to the current law, and he reiterated his desire to see the
Department of State live up to its verbal commitment to helping marginalized
citizens comply with the new requirements.
"Because of the
efforts of my staff, the people at Grace Court won’t be left out of the
electoral process this fall, but there are hundreds of thousands of people in
this commonwealth who won’t get the needed help," Waters said. "People with
language barriers, age barriers, and socioeconomic barriers need to be educated
on how to get in compliance."
Waters has vowed to
continue to help as many of his constituents as he can while waiting for the
court decision as to the constitutionality of the law.
The residents of
Grace Court were happy to have the staff with them for the day, but they were
even happier to know they would be able to vote this fall.
